Welcome,
I am a New York State Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a private practice in Latham New York (near Albany). I am traditionally trained, and prior to starting my own practice, I worked at Community Health Plan (CHP) specializing in the area of trauma. I am also an adjunct professor at Siena College.
Because of my sincere desire to help my patients heal from some very difficult situations, and recognizing that talking about problems frequently only served to re-traumatize them or make things worse, I began to explore alternative ways to help.
I studied EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing….see the methods section of this website for more details) and from there began to hear about Thought Field Therapy (TFT).
After hearing about Thought Field Therapy in 1998, I traveled to California to study with the developer, Dr. Roger Callahan. This experience opened up an entirely new field of psychotherapy for me, called Energy Psychology. I found that by having clients tap or hold their own body while thinking of a distressing emotion, situation or belief, they could begin to calm down in ways they were previously unable to do. The nightmares and flashbacks stopped for them, and they were able to feel more empowered in their lives.
I continued to explore new Energy Psychology methods and became involved in the professional organization ACEP (Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology), helping to bridge these therapies into mainstream psychotherapy by setting standards of practice, promoting research, and education. I am the past-president of this association, which has an international membership.
I have trained hundreds of clinicians in Thought Field Therapy and other Energy Psychology methods, and have developed a one-day course on using Energy Psychology for Multiply Traumatized Patients. I have presented both nationally and internationally on using Energy Psychology for trauma. I have produced two treatment videos: Transforming Trauma with Thought Field Therapy and Transforming the Trauma of the World Trade Center. (see products section of the website for more information) In addition, I supervise a monthly consultation group for clinicians who are integrating these methods into their practice.
With a desire to share these methods with the general public, I produced a video entitled Basic Thought Field Therapy . (see products section of the website for more information)
I am committed to advancing safe, humane trauma treatment. I hope you will explore the resources available here and, if needed, seek appropriate treatment from someone from the referral page. If you are a clinician, I hope you will consider training in these methods and adding these techniques to aid your patients.
As I continued to work with energy psychology methods, it became clearer to me the power of a person’s beliefs to create situations and scenarios over and over. I listened as clients stated goals and intentions, and found that if a client had a conflicting belief, they would stay stuck even though they truly desired change. I began to develop ways to diagnose and treat these blocking beliefs, and in November 2007, released the book The Energy of Belief, which I wrote with psychologist Sheila Bender. (see energyofbelief section of this website for more information about this book)
Over the past decade in addition to my commitment to advancing safe, humane trauma treatment, I began to be drawn to the spiritual dimension of healing and health. Recognizing that all of us have had difficult times, I focused more and more on the spiritual implications of traumatic or overwhelming experiences and how spiritual disconnection or soul loss resulted in dis-ease on a mental, emotional and physical and spiritual level. I began to offer meditation and spiritual discussion groups to assist clients and colleagues in their own journey of re-integrating the self.
I hope you will explore the resources available here and, if needed, seek appropriate treatment from someone from the referral page. Sign up for the monthly newsletter to learn about integrative workshops in the area. Come to a spiritual discussion/meditation group. If you are a clinician, I hope you will also consider training in energy psychology methods and adding these techniques to aid your patients. Blessings,
Mary
